So much for checking back often to read the updated "news from Joy."

I guess I haven't felt the need to write much lately since things have been difficult over here. In the beginning, things were falling into place. Some of the hardship of moving was expected and understandable. Months later things still feel out of order and it's taken a toll on the whole family.

As of right now, we are still praying for good solid employment. It's amazing how powerful that word really is. My faith has been high for the most part and I've stayed pretty positive. I believe things will happen in God's time. However, the waiting part is tough. Moving on...

I will give a quick update on the events that have taken place in the last few months.

In May, we celebrated both my parents' birthdays. As well as my nephew, Trent's 1st birthday. It's times like these that make living here so nice. We've missed so many special occasions over the last 9 years away from home. It's nice to be a part of them even for a short while.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SmMKzAjdsXI/AAAAAAAAAQA/cgSF9CxF3ic/s320/IMG_1122.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360139852939374962" />
Happy Birthday Mom and Dad! His house is bigger than my parents' place and he also has the luxury of a pool to help keep the kids entertained on a hot summer day. Unfortunately for us, the weather forecast changed 2 days before the party from sunny 83 to mostly cloudy 74. So although it wasn't hot enough for the adults to jump in the pool, the kids had a blast swimming. And even though it was kinda cool and breezy, it could've been worse with rain.

I was going nuts planning and making sure things were in order. The one thing I added to my long list of to-dos was making her cake. I don't know why I decided to do it, but that was the most stressful task I had. I wanted to make her princess cake perfect and I am not a baker. In the end, it turned out perfect! The only problem was transporting it to my brother's house. Luckily I took pictures before because on the way there, the back corner ripped off and part of the front got smushed. The drive was fine until the last mile when I hit a couple potholes and then I literally heard the cake bounce up and down. I fixed what I could and Aliza didn't know the difference and that's all that mattered to me.

So all in all, a great party. We ended the night with fireworks from OH since her party was on the 4th of July. That was a crazy show! There was a couple dangerous moments but thankfully no one lost their hand!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SmMRyn6O6cI/AAAAAAAAAQo/cwaKHBln9EU/s320/IMG_1326.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360147542905383362" />
Aliza in her 'birthday tutu dress' as she called it. She wanted one so bad and when it finally arrived, she hated it! We had her wear it periodically throughout the party to have different family see it.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SmMTGciouQI/AAAAAAAAAQw/_9rwlH2knnU/s320/IMG_1362.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360148982962632962" />
Family photo

Why do I ever worry when the Lord has always proven faithful...

It's been a while since I've given any updates on our new life as civilians back in MI. It's definitely been more busy than any move we've made. Although we have a lot of support and help with family here, we are doing a lot more. For instance, I have made more phone calls to doctors' offices and the insurance company in reference to referral authorizations in the last 2 months than I have in the previous nine years. The reason why is when you live by a large military hospital like we did, most medical specialties are located there. So besides a referral from your primary, you don't need to do anything else before being seen. Most importantly, by using a military hospital, you never pay a co-pay or worry about how things may be billed because every service you receive is covered 100%. Now I have to stay on top of things and make sure the right services are authorized and are billed correctly or else payment will be denied.

Anyways, let me get to what I was intending on writing. Every challenging circumstance we've faced, when we've given it to God, has ALWAYS worked out. And that is why it baffles me that I consistently have moments of worry that something might not go well when a new challenge arises. I guess I figured that this was different. Before we left WA and the military, I was prepared and confident that we'd be okay. But once we reached the other side and were now dealing with the reality of being out of our secure life in the military, finding it difficult to get a job here in Michigan, and that our insurance coverage is slowly coming to an end, I started to get real nervous.

Well, once again, the Lord has proved me wrong and reminded me of why He tells us not to be anxious about anything. As most of you know, Ryan's care is a huge priority of us. With our current insurance ending soon, we have been focusing on two things: 1) Get a job with good coverage 2) Get Ryan on medicaid. Well, up until last week we weren't being very successful at reaching our goals. The reasons are, first, we live in MI--America's highest unemployment rate. Second, the medicaid office is months behind here with so many people needing aid that our app wasn't due to be reviewed til end of May. Plus, although our unemployment meant qualification, we currently have comprehensive coverage. So I thought they would try to deny us. By the time we would send an appeal, our current coverage would almost be done. We just kept praying for some intervention in our lives since things didn't seem to be working out as well as we had planned.

But then, Patrick received an email about a security job in the area nearby. Rather than wait til the next day, he decided to go apply in person that same day. He got the job and started the next day. Although it's part time and not a permanent thing, we're thankful for the job. Most of all, it was for a security job in the exact office where our Medicaid case worker worked. Patrick nicely asked our worker if she knew how much further down the line we were and because of him working there, she reviewed our application that next day and sent us our approval letter for medicaid!! God had a plan and it worked!

Not only that, we also got approved the same day for Children's Special Health Care, which provides case management services and covers specialty appointments for Ryan based on his disability. So although we don't need to utilize these services yet, there will be no break in coverage when our current insurance ends. God is taking care of Ryan as He always has and I don't know why I allow myself to worry.

Thank you for your prayers and encouragement! Continue to pray with us as we are praying for the right job for Patrick and myself. I'm mostly looking for a pt job but since nothing has opened up yet, I know my place is still at home. Now that Patrick's temporary job fulfilled what I think it was meant to, I'm hoping the better job is right around the corner.

Ryan's Feeling at Home

I wish I had pictures to show how excited Ryan was when we brought him to his room last night after setting up his own bedroom furniture. He was like a little kid at a candy store, or for him, as if he was watching his favorite scene in Shrek.

Our household goods finally arrived yesterday so it was a long day of unpacking, setting up, and sitting at the storage center. The movers came to the house first to unload Ryan's furniture and medical supplies, as well as, some of our clothes and Aliza's toys. Poor girl also had nothing here but markers and a couple dolls.

The whole time they were unloading, Aliza wanted to play with everything. She would just yell from the driveway, "MY SLIDE, MY SLIDE!" or "MY BIKE, MY BIKE!" At one point, she found her stroller and wanted to go on a walk but I told her I had to help the guys know where to put stuff plus I was marking things off the inventory list. She was unhappy until I pointed out that the guy was bringing all her stuff. Then she was excited and kept saying, "Thank you, Mr.!"

After things were unloaded, we drove to the storage center. After opening the storage, everyone was a little nervous because they knew how much stuff we had and weren't sure if it would fit. Granted it looked small, but I picked the 4 bedroom + garage house size. I probably needed the 5 bedroom + garage + small car to get everything in with ease. In the end, after 7 hours, everything fit right up to the door from floor to ceiling. We had some great movers. The storage manager was shocked and said that only they could've done what they did. They utilized every inch and I am so thankful. So our stuff is permanently in storage until we find a house (and job).

I had left with Aliza to return home after a couple of hours at the storage center to work on Ryan's room and the many boxes in the basement. Sometimes I just wonder why the movers wasted so much room in the boxes. I found a paper towel roll with like 3 sheets left all wrapped up in packing paper that took up like a foot of space. Hey but at least I know that everything was safe...for the most part. I found a box that said pillows. I picked it up and it was so light I threw it on the ground. Big mistake! I opened it up and Ryan's flatscreen was in between all the pillows. It still worked but I would've been so mad if I broke it because it wasn't properly labeled.

At about 9:30, Ryan's room was done. He had been hanging out in his lazyboy in the living room. I walked him to his room and his face just lit up! He stared at his own chair and his own bed and couldn't stop smiling in delight! I put him in bed immediately because he was tired. But he didn't want to lay down. He stayed sitting up leaning over on his bedrail and just looked around giggling. He was so happy that he finally had his room. Ryan is very comfortable with change and new people but he's not always happy. He doesn't have anxiety or stress out, but he won't always light up either until he's somewhere familiar. As soon as he laid down, he relaxed instantly and went to sleep so peacefully. At least with all this change, he has his little safe haven.

I will post pictures later since I haven't kept up with uploading them. But here's an older one of when the kids just arrived at the Detroit airport. Notice Aliza looks exhausted since she only slept 1 hour during this 5 hour red eye. And Ryan is awake as can be and laughing! He slept at least 7 hours from the drive to the airport til we arrived in Detroit.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/Sb-Y8RqVXmI/AAAAAAAAAP4/MiYj7myiNAM/s320/IMG_0788.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314134246621011554" />

Things are slowly getting better...

We've been in MI 5 days now. I'm feeling less stressed and have a little more energy each day. I'm also so excited that Patrick arrives in the morning. He's a maniac! Who drives 2400 miles in less than 2 days? He left around 11 am Thursday and is due here 5 am Saturday. Crazy huh? I usually worry about him on these long drives but I gave it to God; plus, it was a relief knowing that his dad, who is a truck driver, was with him to help. I knew he couldn't drive crazy fast with his dad in the car and if he needed a break, he had a great partner.

This week we met Ryan & Aliza's pediatrician. Did I already mention that on the previous blog? I think I did. But anyhow, I am so thankful for him. He's experienced, kind, caring, knowledgeable, and also a pulmonologist who will be a huge asset for Ryan's respiratory issues.

We also met four of our home care nurses and so far they have been great. I trained one today and will be training each of them this week. It's a lot of work, but that's part of the move and it will all get better soon.

Aliza has been enjoying my brother's kids. They've stopped by in the evenings to play and she just seems so big playing with them. I'm so used to her interacting with other two-year-olds that I'm surprised how well she does with older kids. I've been thankful for them because they've helped her stay occupied while I've been caring for Ryan full time.

This coming up week is another busy week full of errands to the DMV, storage place, Medicaid office; training new nurses; and unpacking our furniture that comes. So keep us in your prayers as we continue to settle down. I'm also getting a little stir crazy and can't wait til I can have a fun day out eating at a local favorite restaurant! By the way, it felt like 60 today! The sun was out and Aliza played in the yard and took a walk. She was so happy not to be bundled up. Funny how it was 9 degrees when we arrived and today it was 60. But I'm not complaining.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SbG_iS_9vZI/AAAAAAAAAPw/HYOlBotx21o/s320/IMG_0809.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310236031583108498" />
Aliza enjoying the sunshine in the yard--don't you love her good kicking form in this pic?

It's happening whether I'm ready or not...

I definitely have been doing a horrible job of updating this. Sorry about that. I will try to do better especially since many people will be wondering how things are going for us post-military life.

Well, the kids and I are in Michigan now. We arrived yesterday and reality hit hard. Nothing emotional or anything. And it's not like I wasn't planning for this move for months now. But being on the other side just makes it so much more real. I'm suddenly getting the sense of urgency, which I probably should've had this whole time, to figure out what we're going to do now.

I realize though we've done everything we should've and nothing else could've been done. But it's like someone has turned over the hourglass and time is already running out.

I am staying positive as best as I can. Although Aliza and I were sick flying out, the flight started out the best we've experienced. We have actually flown quite a bit over the last 9 years with Ryan and this was the best time we've had. The Northwest Airlines staff from check-in to flight attendants were great! Ryan did well the whole way through. He fell asleep in the car to the airport and didn't wake up til we walked off the plane in MI. Aliza did pretty good too despite being sick. She didn't sleep but an hour but she was very good and didn't run up and down the aisles like I was worried about.

We met the kids' pediatrician today and I am so happy. He's also a pulmonologist--exactly what Ryan needs for his respiratory issues. We did find out why Aliza's been asking for ice for a booboo on her cheek that we never see: ear infection. But luckily, she recently stopped spitting out the medications we try to give her.

Patrick will be arriving next week. We have lots to do still so I can't wait til April when things have slowed down a bit. That'll probably be when I will realize this isn't a vacation and I am here for good. I will feel all the emotions that have been covered from being so busy. But when all my tasks are checked off, I will be happy to be home but so sad to leave the great life I've enjoyed and all the people I've met along the way. I will post pictures soon but I hardly have time for anything. I'm sneaking this in way past my own bedtime.

I will do my best to keep this up weekly as promised!

Aliza's Swim and Dance Lessons

As I mentioned last post, Aliza is now swimming with a float on her back. Today was her third week doing it and although we don't take her to the pool besides Saturdays, she shows improvement each time we come back. Today she went from one wall to the other without stopping. Here are the videos I took:

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v8.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Deb58812d17be1f7f%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331128377%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D7EF51E1D2BA6BABF32B0C7A3003D3CE735116538.6234F078A51FE947EBC593FC48817C85E92ABF4%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Deb58812d17be1f7f%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Ds8V3qxu8g93kuVaPue6SbYwtM1E&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v21.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Dedafad930edc66d7%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331128377%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D3F064804EC7CF4CEBF917E2465FC291E16381FD5.1C2C20EC9B0CBF540FAE9C70CB83C8DD9418DA19%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dedafad930edc66d7%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DiwmUXq62Dk6ggfXLrAxJjSvv9nI&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />
Aliza also had her 1st dance class. It's called Creative Movement where they basically have fun with music on. It's somewhat structured but flexible since it's for 2 year olds. Aliza was shy at first and just walked around looking at herself in the mirror or watching the others. She would participate if I was by her side. But she would still end up running to her dad and sitting down. The few times she joined the group was when they were running around. Hopefully with a few more sessions, she'll figure out how to follow the leader. When Aliza watched the first video at home, she said, "Aliza being shy." The second video is her highlight of the class because they ran around in circles. Although it wasn't part of the lesson.

"I'm doing it, Mom!"--gulp, gulp, cough, cough

Well Aliza's been in swim lessons since she was a little under one. She is now 2 1/2 years old. She's taking lessons from the YMCA so they're not intense or anything. Their approach for infants and toddlers is to let them have fun and get comfortable in the water while learning some basics skills, such as kicking, paddling, holding breath, climbing out and jumping in.

Last Saturday, after taking a nice break for the holidays, we returned for a new session. During freetime, we attached the float to her back as always and practiced treading water. This time ended up different because instead of sinking or flipping on to her face and belly when we let go, she actually put everything together for a split second and was swimming!!! She was so excited! Even if it lasted 2 seconds, it was amazing to watch! There was fear but also a lot of joy in her face and in her voice. It was cool to see all the different components of her lessons finally click. That afternoon she managed to tread up to 5 seconds.

Today was an awesome day!! She improved so much. She would swim about 6 feet to catch me, rest and then do it all over again. The panic has changed to excitement and to, "I'm doing it, Mom! I'm swimming! I'm a fish!" followed by gulp, gulp, cough, cough. But even with the minor choking, she's ready to start again. I wish I had photos or a video but I was the only one there. I'll have Patrick take some next week.

Moving Details

I guess some of you would like to know more about the move and such. I meant to get into that in my previous entry but I got sidetracked.

Anyways, the plan is for us to move back home to MI. Yes, I said Michigan. Despite the problems with the economy, we feel this is where we need to go initially after our discharge. We will be staying with my parents at first until we get stable jobs.

After we lose our medical benefits, we will lose our nurses who have been a tremendous help to us in caring for Ryan. This change alone will be difficult so we wanted to be around family--both of our families are there. The only way we'll obtain nursing again even when we have private health insurance is when we make it through the waiting list for Medicaid. So please pray!

I did say "until we get stable jobs" earlier because I am planning on going back to work and helping out financially. However, if the nursing doesn't work out, I won't be able to focus on accounting as it is a day job. I will have to take anything I can get in the evenings or weekends when Patrick and my parents are able to watch Ryan. Without nursing, Ryan can't go to school and I can't just have any 'daycare' watch him. I am praying about going to school part time to pursue nursing. That way I'm not stuck working 9-5 but rather whatever odd hours work for our family.

We want to stay in MI, but if we can't, our next move will be to Washington DC. Patrick wants to obtain a federal position in MI or DC so that he can transfer over his military years. I'd be bummed to leave family in MI but Patrick's brother and family, as well as our favorite church family, are in VA. So we wouldn't mind there either.

We are definitely stepping into the realm of the unknown soon. We really won't know how things will turn out until we get there. I thank God for His promises to us and I am holding onto them especially during this time. Some favorites are:

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." - Phil 4:13

"For I know the plans I have for you...plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you hope and a future."--Jer 29:11

Matthew 6:25-34 is too long to write but it basically tells us not worry. Instead, we are to seek Him and his righteousness first then everything else will fall into place.

So though our circumstances can change, God doesn't and that's all that matters.

Accepting Change

I think I'm like the only one who hasn't posted something about Christmas. I guess it's because right before Christmas we found out Patrick is getting medically discharged. At the moment I got a little frustrated with life. I knew it was coming and I thought I was ready but I guess I figured we'd get the good results out of a medical discharge which is a medical retirement. However, that didn't happen. He is being medically separated which means no benefits post-military life for the family.

I'm okay with it now. No. Honestly, I am. But that's just now. The first week or two I was pretty negative. I am a planner and researcher and have to learn everything I can about whatever has my interest at the time. So after we heard the news, I searched all things that had to do with state healthcare, private insurance, social programs for the disabled, etc. I got SO OVERWHELMED with the costs of healthcare, that I started planning and charting the type of jobs and incomes we would need to maintain a certain lifestyle while paying for Ryan's medical care. I seriously have a problem.

My problem isn't my tendency to plan but that I try to take things into my own hands. Once I have an idea of how things should go, I have a problem accepting any other solution. I wasn't even thinking of the impact it was having on my husband. Instead of asking him how he was feeling, I would just throw facts at him like, "Did you know that some insurances charge $75 for an ER visit?!?!" or "Everytime we go to the doctor we have to pay at least $10-$40?" Yeah it may sound silly to some of you but for a military family who pays nothing and receives thousands of dollars in care, services, and equipment, it's hard to imagine.

I eventually learned that I was wrong. I should've been a support and encouragement to my husband while giving up our situation to God before freaking out. Once I finally did that, my whole attitude changed. It's not that I think it'll be easy now because it's not. But I'm not going to complain or be anxious about it. I'm going to focus on being positive and flexible to wherever this new life takes us.

I've learned to be thankful. And why not? God has done nothing but take care of us. He has never failed us or left us. Why would He start now? If His way of providing is awesome jobs and great health coverage--wonderful! If not, still great! As long as we're in His will, what else could be better? Yeah, sometimes His will leads us through some hard times, but there's always something good that comes out of it.

I am at peace about our discharge now. Thank you for your prayers and support! Our family will continue to need it.

Aliza singing & counting

I just wanted to share some video of Aliza singing and counting. It's crazy to think that I'm in WA right now. This is actually my first winter here that I remember snow sticking to the ground for more than a couple of days. It's sooo beautiful! Right now, I kind of feel like I'm in MI. Of course, it's not as cold as there but I love looking out my window and seeing nothing but white. Granted, it causes life to shut down around here, it's still worth it to me especially around Christmas.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SU2h80sDngI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/p7mDuMA7qno/s320/CIMG5442.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282056004283112962" />
About a week after our 1st snow and it's still falling! Yay!

We enjoyed the snow for the first couple of days, then we all started getting sick. Yes again. But nothing major. Just scratchy throats, coughing, and runny noses. But enough to want to look at the snow rather than play in it.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SU2faEgJmQI/AAAAAAAAAPA/KzTeCn4Fvu4/s320/CIMG5429.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282053208209463554" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SU2f2b1_i8I/AAAAAAAAAPI/TUA3IND443A/s320/CIMG5432.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282053695511432130" />
Ryan and his nurse, Becky, walking in the snow around the 3rd day

Ryan's nurses have had some trouble getting to work so we've had a couple of days alone. It can get tough trying to keep up with his daily schedule while taking care of normal things with Aliza and still helping Patrick recover. But it's also a nice break too having the house to ourselves.

Patrick is feeling better. He now has a hard cast on for another 4 weeks. That's not fun as some of you may know. As things are healing up inside, his incisions are getting pretty itchy. I have to warn him constantly to not think about sticking a hanger down in there. (He kept doing that his first surgery)

Anyways, Aliza and I made her first snowman the very first day of this weeklong snow storm. There was hardly any snow yet so it's VERY SMALL but cute. I didn't want to take the chance of the snow disappearing without her having that experience. Little did I know that the meteorologists would have it right and that the snow would actually stay this time and keep coming. Unfortunately for the snowman, we didn't have any buttons or carrots. Patrick gave us candy to accessorize. Aliza kept eating his buttons. The snowman's nose started "bleeding" when the sun hit because it was some kind of red candy coating. It was funny! I had a picture of that but it was on my cell phone, which unfortunately died from falling in water. I did catch a couple of pictures before the nose bleed.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SU2e4DhFtuI/AAAAAAAAAOw/kMadkF5zmFs/s320/CIMG5413.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282052623829415650" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SU2fHcx-0UI/AAAAAAAAAO4/gbzpdRxQB0w/s320/CIMG5415.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282052888309190978" />
Aliza's 1st snowman after the first snowfall

Patrick's 3rd Ankle Surgery

Well surgery day finally arrived on Dec 4 after being postponed twice. Not that I was looking forward to it but I knew it was going to happen so I was glad it happened after Thanksgiving but weeks before Christmas. Patrick won't be weightbearing for a while but he'll at least be out of the initial pain by Christmas.

So far so good. He's in pain obviously but thankfully no infection or complications. We're praying for quick recovery and that it would be successful this time around so he can be active again and run, play hockey, play drums, etc.

They sent him home with an ice machine called GameReady. It's his second time using it and it is definitely a lifesaver! Unfortunately, we've had some trouble with this one getting his cast wet so they're replacing it tomorrow. Ice packs can't even compare to how this machine helps him deal with the pain. I love technology!

While we were waiting in the surgery waiting room, Aliza felt extremely hot. I walked her down to the pediatric clinic to check her temp and it was 103. When we brought Patrick home, I found out Ryan was running a 101 temp with an ear infection, my nurse was calling out sick, and Aliza's fever followed with stomach bug stuff. I almost freaked out wondering how I was going to manage 3 sick people but God gave me peace and reminded me He was there to help and strengthen me. I had to just focus on one day at a time and lean on Him. It has definitely worked. I praise him after we finish a day. So far we've made it 2 days and the 3rd day is going well. Thanks for all your prayers!!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/STtYk_EgwDI/AAAAAAAAAOY/OGJ9jbdyVFA/s320/1204080931a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276908780823560242" />
Morning of surgery waiting to be called back

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/STtYyFaL80I/AAAAAAAAAOg/tUb85Wcp1mI/s320/1204081028.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276909005863383874" />
Still goofy--ready to be taken back

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/STtZBPSvGjI/AAAAAAAAAOo/gcUuoC_cOe0/s320/1204081027.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276909266214525490" />
Saying 'see ya later, daddy'

Thanksgiving Weekend

Well, we had a great Thanksgiving. We spent the evening with Uncle Paul, the Roberts family & the Kauffmans. The food was wonderful and filling. Best of all, Patrick's surgery that was scheduled the week before Thanksgiving was postponed to Dec 4. He wasn't too happy because he wanted to get it over with. But I was glad to have him painless during Thanksgiving. We also already picked out our tree so the day after Thanksgiving, we just walked straight to it and cut it down.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/STtS0cDUboI/AAAAAAAAAOA/UuX3sK6BPhM/s320/1128081021a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276902449231457922" />
cutting our tree

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/STtTDqb-RGI/AAAAAAAAAOI/FUsV0-7b-DA/s320/1128081031.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276902710790997090" />
Taking our tree home

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/STtTfFU-07I/AAAAAAAAAOQ/Gy4r5DMrtb0/s320/CIMG5408.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276903181865898930" />
Our tree

Black Friday was such a great day for me. I felt so productive. If only we could always go shopping and run errands before the kids woke up. Although I had a cold and was exhausted after hosting Thanksgiving dinner, I met up with Heidi at 5 am. We managed to cross things off our list from Toysrus, JcPenney, Express & Fred Meyer. I actually loved it! Unfortunately, I only had 3 hours (a positive thing for our bank account) since I had to be back by 8:30 to leave for Ryan's weekly therapy. I was so tempted to go back out and face the crowd but that would've been selfish of me. We were supposed to be spending the afternoon decorating. So I let it go and decided I have a whole year to plan my Black Friday 2009 outing.

This weekend Patrick also took me on a movie date to see Twilight. It was totally out of love for me that he went because it is not something he would ever want to see. Thanks honey! I'm not into vampires at all but I am a romantic and I really enjoyed the series. I was just told about these books the month before and read all four books in about a week. It wasn't the best quality movie since it had a low budget but I still enjoyed it.

Long time no post

It's been way too long. I meant to post several times and got caught up with all kinds of things. So an update post is coming soon. Probably this weekend after we decorate.

One thing though, Patrick's surgery has been postponed for the second time to early December. He's bummed because his ankle's in pain and he wants to get it over with. But I'm somewhat glad because he got to spend thanksgiving with us without having excruciating pain. And we did have a pleasant thanksgiving evening. We had his brother, Paul, here along with the Kauffmans and the Roberts. So now I'm off to eat some yummy turkey sandwiches and then decorate our giant tree. I'm not kidding. We underestimated the size of this tree when it was still in the ground. But we'll find a place for it.

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Starting Christmas early

(This post was saved 11/17 & I forgot to post it. So it's very late)

It's not even Thanksgiving yet but we got a headstart on some Christmas traditions. Part of the reason is because Patrick is having his ankle surgery this Thursday and is supposed to be off his feet for at least 2 weeks then I think no weight bearing on his left leg but may possibly use crutches. Last year, we waited til after his surgery (which was right before Thanksgiving too), and he hobbled around on one foot trying to decorate the tree.

Anyways, last Sunday, we attended a charity shopping event at a local mall called Purchase with a Purpose. You have to pay $5 to get into the mall, which goes to local charities (including my MOPS group). The mall is open for 3 hours only to paid shoppers and there are discounts, door prizes, free Santa photo, and Christmas music. The local Christian radio station was there and handled the raffles and main court music. So there was some great Christian music there including a live show from Jadon Lavik. It was nice to get an early start on Christmas shopping without the huge crowds plus at a discount. We were also thankful we got a free picture with Santa without the crazy long lines. The funny thing is, the kids don't even really know about Santa so Aliza just thought he was a grandpa and called him Santa Paws. They took a decent picture though.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 227px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SSAlW2nPMhI/AAAAAAAAANw/8mM7SHHTygw/s320/Kids+with+Santa.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5269252638570918418" />

The sad part was that I felt lucky that night and believed that I was going to win something. I kept telling Patrick that my name would be called. I was being hopeful during the big ticket items like a massage chair and hot tub although I never win anything. I couldn't tell if Patrick wanted to leave and the kids were getting tired so I decided we should probably go. I hesitated and kept listening as we were getting further away. The next day, a friend mentioned that just 5 or 6 names after we left, my name was called. So sad! It would've been a wonderful thing to have a giant gift basket full of chocolates, gifts, and gift cards for the stores in the mall especially during Christmas shopping. Oh well. I'm moving on.

Yesterday, we went to a tree farm in Tacoma that allows you to reserve a tree to cut down after Thanksgiving. Patrick wouldn't have had a say if we waited til after Thanksgiving like normal. It was actually lots of fun because there were a ton of trees and we got to decorate it to show that it was taken. We just used ribbon they provided but some families went as far as putting real ornaments and beads. At least now, we picked it out together and all I have to do is tell them when I'm coming and they'll help me cut it and carry it to my car.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/STtPoVzTLUI/AAAAAAAAAN4/bmoY2J9Dzf0/s320/1115081449.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276898942860340546" />

"Present Bomama"

Aliza has been watching the election with me. One time she saw Bill O'Reilly and said, "Look's it's Jon-a-cain!"

She asks to see him but we told her that he didn't win and she won't be able to see him much anymore. So now she says,

"Jon-a-cain is gone. Bye Jon-a-cain!"

We told her our new president is President Obama.
Her response was, "See Bac Bomama. Those of you who know me, know that I voted for John McCain. I am saddened that he didn't win but I am also genuinely happy for Barack Obama. I never disliked him but I just related more to the McCain/Palin team on particular issues. I feel bad because I feel John McCain has a great heart and because of his life's dedication to this country would've been a wonderful President.

I pray for McCain and his family as they deal with this loss. But I also pray for our new President Obama. I pray that he will be strengthened and protected as he leads our nation. I pray that he will seek God's wisdom to make the right choices for this country.

Congratulations, President Obama!! It is an exciting moment in our history. I am happy for you and your family. You will have my support (although not always my agreement) and prayer as my new president.

Tag You're It

Mikki atHere's What Let's Do has tagged me. I don't typically do this but since Mikki is my sister-in-law, I thought I would go along. It's a fun way to learn some random things about your friends. So these are the rules of TAG:

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.
5. Let each person know they've been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

My six random things...
1. I can eat rice whenever & with anything. Some favorites are at breakfast with eggs & sausage and with KFC. Yummy!

2. I love anything history!! I'm just intrigued about other places & times and how it's led to the present.

3. I have laughed so hard, I've peed! :) (but not in recent years)

4. But he just called to tell me that his doctor had to leave for the week so they postponed it to Nov. 21. I'm happy and sad at the same time. I wanted it over with so we could move on and get into the holidays without him being in pain. But now Thanksgiving will still be rough just like last year. At least we have a couple more weeks to plan for it and get things done. So keep him in your prayers still. I'm praying that it will work this time and it'll be the last surgery he needs. Also that it goes smooth and the pain won't be overwhelming. Last year, Patrick and our friend took the kids while I stayed home passing out candy. But Patrick's brother, Paul, offered to take my place. So we got to collect candy as a family. My friend Janice and her son Gabe came along.

It had been raining all day but it stopped just in time thankfully. It ended up being a nice evening. The weird thing was there were a ton more kids than there were houses passing out candy. There was a definite difference from last year. Makes me wonder if people are really having a hard time with the economy that they couldn't purchase candy. Someone mentioned on the street that they couldn't afford it this year. The weirdest part was the dozen or so houses that were heavily decorated had nothing for the kids. So there were lines at houses and everyone ran out by 7:15. I had a lot of candy and we had to close shop much earlier than normal.

It was still fun for the kids because that's the most people you will see out walking in the neighborhood at once. Everybody is friendly too.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQ0PNxxSiQI/AAAAAAAAAMg/PUCriDXL720/s320/CIMG5357.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263880268838766850" />
Optimus Prime (transformer) & Sleeping Beauty

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQ0QA-YKvCI/AAAAAAAAAMw/OJgceFwVkKI/s320/CIMG5381.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263881148396387362" />
Aliza & her friend, Gabe, burning off their sugar

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQ0QbvmjmhI/AAAAAAAAAM4/UULmdLWCV4g/s320/CIMG5367.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263881608286673426" />
Almost out of candy

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQ0RNOeYJQI/AAAAAAAAANI/h7K2QdbfMSk/s320/CIMG5360.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263882458387457282" />
Lining up

Hide & Seek Aliza's Way

Aliza's been doing and saying the funniest things lately that we can't help but laugh hysterically about it. One of the new things is playing hide & seek. For now, we let her do it her way but eventually we'll teach her how to really hide so she doesn't lose with her friends. Whenever she hides, she thinks she's got the best spot. Unfortunately for her, it's right in the open for everyone to see her. She doesn't realize it though. She sits very still and looks down thinking you don't see her. Patrick couldn't believe where she would hide, so from the very beginning he's played along and just looked around her pretending not to see her. Eventually he would "find" her which results in screams of excitement. She then wants to play over and over. Here are some of her favorite hiding spots.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQP4SNFU4KI/AAAAAAAAAMA/qPUl4jfy1tA/s320/CIMG5242.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261321781332205730" />
Hiding quietly in the doorway of the laundry room

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQP48ZJkTEI/AAAAAAAAAMQ/iiMyuUqOfu0/s320/CIMG5245.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261322506125724738" />
Excited that her dad found her hiding at her desk

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQP5MSqbDyI/AAAAAAAAAMY/y95oLJ9qSlQ/s320/CIMG5243.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261322779262390050" />
"We got you now!"

Friends

This week I had the chance to meet up with friends on my own without kids TWICE! It's special enough when it happens, but two times in one week is just awesome!

Thursday I went to Black Angus (the plan was The Ram but it was an hour wait) for Kristen's last once-a-month girls dinner. Kristen and her family are being medically discharged from the military and leaving in a week to move back home to SD. She's in her last trimester so pray their trip goes smooth and Baby Meyer doesn't come until after they're safe and sound back home. Patrick and I have known the Meyer family since 2001. We're glad they've been stationed here long enough for us to move back and see them again. It's kinda cool because right before we left WA in 2004, they had a daughter named Peyton born on Patrick & Moe's birthday.

We wish you well, Kristen & Jason!! God bless you as you make this transition! We will be praying for you! We've been blessed to have you as friends.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 209px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQPvHUoEgQI/AAAAAAAAALQ/UQ7HQtcCs3E/s320/CIMG5300.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261311698773770498" />
Holly, Jess, Melissa, Kristen, Heidi, & Me

Today I drove to New Castle, WA for Liza & Andre's baby shower. Liza and I have known each other since I was 5 or 6 years old. We share a lot childhood memories such as being angels in Christmas plays, flower girls in a wedding, lighting candles prior to Sunday services together, and vacationing with each other's family. Unfortunately, life got busy and when she went off to school and I got married we pretty much lost touch. Thankfully we ended up in the same place recently and were able to catch up after 10 years. Liza and Andre are expecting their first baby boy in December. It was so nice to be a part of the celebration of his upcoming birth. Another great thing was her sister-in-law, Candice, flew out to help throw the shower. It's been about 10 years since I've seen her too. Candice is amazing! She made the shower special for Liza by bringing a touch of home from people who miss & love her.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQP1iQdtmkI/AAAAAAAAAL4/_ucD8fRbil4/s320/CIMG5343.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261318758582819394" />
Liza, Candice, & Me

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQP0MQf8ikI/AAAAAAAAALo/WZ_7yqvP5S0/s320/CIMG5310.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261317281123437122" />
One of the MANY homemade onesies sent from loved ones back home

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SQP0carFfLI/AAAAAAAAALw/g9YSEUOd3g4/s320/CIMG5314.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261317558732422322" />
A fun game where Liza had to choose the "best baby". I figured she would like it because she doesn't mind fresh fish or chicken nuggets. I assumed those two together are like fish sticks. Well Patrick served Aliza her plate. Immediately, Aliza leaned down to smell the fish and with a funny face said, "Stinky fish!" She refused to try it.

Well, today I made some salmon with rice for lunch. I didn't want to give her any without letting her see me eat it first. She ate salmon before but since it smells worse than fish sticks I wasn't sure if she'd be turned off now. We sat down for lunch and had the same food except my plate had salmon. She kept looking at the salmon I tried to disguise as chicken by cutting it up. She then says, "Smelly fish." She stood up on her chair and leans in for a better sniff and says it again. I just laughed! But I put some on a spoon mixed with rice and she took a bite. She liked it and asked for "More fish please." I was so relieved. I'm just glad she didn't give up the real fish.

Busy Birthday Week

This was a busy week of birthdays for our family.

First, we enjoyed a visit from Patrick's parents to celebrate his mom's birthday. The kids loved having them here. They had a chance to show off everything they've been learning and enjoyed some good cuddle time. We ended the visit with a great birthday dinner for Grandma. It was short but sweet. It's times like these that really make us want to move back home. Here are some photos after our dinner:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SP9iEy1Fu1I/AAAAAAAAAJ0/naPI9B4MFPM/s320/CIMG5252.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260030724295474002" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SP9j5GLJOHI/AAAAAAAAAKU/BauKmEAzbQU/s320/CIMG5251.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260032722353076338" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SP9kHQ-g1WI/AAAAAAAAAKc/pQJ0Gt8zaw8/s320/CIMG5256.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260032965771056482" />

Next, Patrick and Moe shared a birthday this past Monday. Patrick turned 28 and Moe is now 5 years old. Time flies, huh? When we went to the kennel to adopt Moe, Patrick picked the craziest one who was jumping and biting all the others and the one who escaped. He had so much personality that we couldn't resist. So we took him home. Five years later, he is the same. He's still a hyper, crazy escape artist.

As a result of his frequent runaway escapades (and other things), we decided to give him away to family. Patrick's parents were going to take him but we didn't prepare in advance for a flight to MI. Patrick's brother, Paul, who lives 10 minutes away said he'd take Moe--at least for a trial period.

In the 2 days he's been gone, Aliza has hardly mentioned his name. In fact, I've been the one with withdrawals. I miss having him run around like his crazy self after balls. I miss seeing Aliza laugh hysterically at him. I miss dropping some food on the floor and being okay because I know he'll eat it. And when he's not being stinky, it was nice having him to cuddle and keep me warm. It's easy to miss him but when I focus on why we let him go, I start to feel better again.

He will be happier not getting beat up by Aliza. Ryan won't constantly be attacked with slobbery kisses that he hates. I won't have to chase him around the neighborhood as he poops in other yards or messes up their flower bed. I don't have to deal with him waking up Aliza for barking at all the people walking by. No more waking up to irritating sounds of snoring or him cleaning himself. No more little dog bum scooting on our floor in circles when he gets excited. (yes, just like the commercial and yes, we've taken him in and it never stops)

Let me just add that we learned to live with some of his annoying habits but it wasn't until we moved back to WA that he started escaping and scooting his bum. He isn't happy with us anymore. He's comfortable but not happy. He doesn't like sharing his attention with the kids. He'll be happier with his Uncle and maybe eventually his grandparents. Undivided attention is what he needs and they can give it to him.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SP9iVdpDMFI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/WTv9HEltmNo/s320/CIMG5276.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260031010665607250" />
Happy 28th Birthday, Patrick!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SP9ipZQA6OI/AAAAAAAAAKE/RJeDw1punjI/s320/CIMG5278.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260031353084242146" />
Moe eating a piece of birthday cake

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SP9i2nyU8ZI/AAAAAAAAAKM/xJcevtJEznQ/s320/CIMG5282.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260031580324557202" />
Saying bye to Moe after his party as he leaves with Uncle Paul

Ryan Walking

Every Friday, Ryan goes to Good Samaritan's Children's Therapy Unit (CTU) in Puyallup for physical and occupational therapy. It is lots of fun for both the kids because they built the center as Noah's Ark. It's an amazing place with a ton of equipment for the kids. Ryan has been learning to push his walker independently but we still help him steer and turn. He does better at the center and at school than he does at home because of our carpet. Also he needs motivation and I think he just knows it's expected of him there.

His therapist from school has been working on having him take some steps without any support. It started out with just a couple steps before falling. Now he can do up to 6 or 7 steps. I have a video from my cell phone of him doing it at Good Sam. We are all so proud of his hard work!!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v23.nonxt4.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D7fd01b7271415298%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331128377%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D2DB7B206AF7EEACA70323D94AEDCA9D738790F26.4B514AC508D82C2885638B3D2408BF3AC4722056%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D7fd01b7271415298%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Du9me57wHRebhQczJfDw3ao36Qpk&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

We thank God for all the things that are happening in Ryan's life. We hadn't taken one since 2006 and we'll probably make sure to keep it up every two years. I scheduled our appointment for after naps believing that it would work out perfectly. It ended up being extremely stressful because Aliza decided for that one day, she wouldn't nap. NOTHING helped. We went so far as driving her around and she just sang to herself. The crazy thing is, she naps everyday and if we are in the car around her naptime, she always falls asleep. But not this time. Ryan decided to skip his nap too.

We gave up on trying and finished getting ready. On our way there, we did our best to keep the kids awake for the 20 minute drive. It seemed we would make it. But 5 minutes before we got there, Aliza passed out and Ryan was slowly fading! I accepted the fact that we would have the worst pictures ever. I wasn't upset or in a bad mood but just in a "oh well" mood.

When we got to the studio, it felt like 90 degrees in there, which is probably why Ryan just wanted to sleep. Thankfully Aliza was awake and in good spirits because we made her walk through the mall and promised to buy her some bubble tea if she behaved well. To our surprise, it was the photographer's first day on the job. She took over 50 shots with some hilarious poses! I just kept thinking, "Seriously? Does this actually look good to you?" We cooperated and did what she asked...well, Patrick and I did. The kids...not so much. And that is why we took a ton of pictures. We did finally have one decent family photo but the kids don't look happy at all. But at least they're looking and I couldn't be happier.

Our Family Photo
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SPTjB9GKG8I/AAAAAAAAAJE/6ehqT9GTb80/s320/s41129cb112778_10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257076287767976898" />

Next is one of the "Are you serious...you want us to do what?" photos A back to back photo with Patrick just didn't seem very loving or candid. I laugh every time I see it. It's like were posing for a recruiting ad of some sort.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SPTkY9wWsMI/AAAAAAAAAJM/Wox9Tc3wAgM/s320/s41129cb112778_46.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257077782593581250" />

Don't you love kids?
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SPTlpnfp6RI/AAAAAAAAAJc/Z4zKPMJ_Eio/s320/s41129cb112778_14.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257079168187361554" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SPTliOYlWRI/AAAAAAAAAJU/F18xRHvsn1A/s320/s41129cb112778_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257079041187731730" />

A Great Photo
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SPTm9KDK1RI/AAAAAAAAAJs/rZNQKlccciw/s320/s41129cb112778_53.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257080603392267538" />

There was one more absolutely hilarious picture that I want to post so bad so you can laugh with me. She took the summer off. I was worried she'd have issues following instructions because she's older now and more stubborn about doing what she wants. She actually did better this time around. There was more work in swimming rather than just playing and singing. I was impressed with her hard work!

Immediately after swimming, she goes to open gym. It's a movement education class where they get to run free in a gymnastics center. It's a lot of fun for parents too! Patrick came for the first time and kept saying he was going to run and jump on the vault doing a front handspring into the foam pit. Yeah right! He did try to do the rings--not an easy thing! I had a hard enough time trying to move around in the foam pit. It is great being able to play around on equipment like a kid again. Although it is technically for kids only. Check out the video at the end of her running on the trampoline. It's just so cute because of the way she runs!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v12.nonxt7.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3De0d6f461beec63d1%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331128377%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D36D9821A0710EADCEF3DC921EAF6B55EEDE2717A.1EB95C00D79872AEC31241626ABE4FD0E630492%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3De0d6f461beec63d1%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DYB3RPdw-PhmswkwBWce1BpslS88&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Fall's Here

I am realizing that summer is finally gone and fall is here to stay. I won't complain though. Our summer ended beautifully in the 70s two days ago. Now it's 60s with grey and gloomy skies. But for our last weekend of sunshine, we were able to enjoy it at Lattin's Country Cider Mill.

I found this place 5 years ago before we moved away. I had a friend (Audrey) from childhood visiting and we wanted to find a cider mill because we went annually as kids. I wasn't disappointed with it and so we make sure to go every year. The kids get to pet and feed animals. They even have a giant slingshot to shoot apples at cows. Sounds mean huh? You're not supposed to aim it directly at them but only to shoot it near them so they can eat the apples. But some kids try to hit them.

They also have a hay ride, corn maze, and a giant pumpkin patch. Regardless of all that, they have the best cider and apple fritters! Yummy! This year I even bothered to buy a pie pumpkin to attempt homemade pumpkin pie. I've always thought pie filling from the can tasted good but people tell me I'm missing out. So if I don't mess up the recipe this week, I'll see if their right.

Ryan's & Aliza's Birthdays

Aliza turned two in July. We did celebrate her birthday with all our relatives when her and I took a trip to MI in June. But of course we had a little celebration the day after her birthday back home which included fireworks! (We like her to think the big July 4th fireworks are just for her)

It's amazing how much she's changed in one year. Funny thing is her whole 1st year I documented and compiled in a book. I kept track of firsts of everything: sounds she made, foods, etc. But her second year where she made tremendous changes, I have no record but lots of pictures. I guess that happens when she doesn't sit in one spot anymore for me to do that kind of stuff. Rather I'm constantly keeping track of her so she stops stuffing the toilet with paper, coloring Patrick's drums, or beating up Moe (It's a love-hate relationship with them).

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SOTdwl2x1CI/AAAAAAAAAGs/Rx3TWH_zt8Q/s320/CIMG3964.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252566892286170146" />

Ryan turned nine in September. He also has a holiday weekend--Labor Day. Unfortunately no fireworks like Aliza. But this year, he got to see his favorite character, Shrek, in the live broadway musical in Seattle. He was so bored waiting for the show to start. Nothing on stage gave him hints of what we were about to see. But when Shrek came out, he just perked up and couldn't keep his eyes off the stage. He had a great time. Unfortunately it was naptime so during intermission he fell asleep and didn't see the end. He enjoyed the first hour and a half though.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SOTfpS9VuqI/AAAAAAAAAG0/RfELiitAkFA/s320/0907081611c.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252568965977586338" />

Aug 2008: Random Happenings

No major events happened this month but I'll share some things to give you a glimpse into our lives.

Aliza's really into being Supergirl. We could at least get her a cape but for now we still just use a handtowel. She's content so we're happy.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SOL05bdJBgI/AAAAAAAAAEM/F4xlm-_UjfE/s320/CIMG5046.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252029382927123970" />

We decided to help Patrick's friend by watching his 6 week old puppy who wasn't house-trained. It was only for 5 days so we figured we could manage. It ended up being the hardest thing because Moe hated him. He constantly had accidents in the house. He chewed everything! Worst of all was that his family was delayed and didn't come back for two weeks.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SOL1HZB4F6I/AAAAAAAAAEU/I2BOI3dq3w8/s320/gunner2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252029622794065826" />

There's lots of silliness that goes on in our house as I'm sure happens wherever there is a toddler. She stayed the month of July to make the most of her one trip a year. My dad joined her for the last 2 weeks. We had a great time with them and did a lot of sightseeing. We took them to Victoria BC and to Mt Rainier. During their stay, Patrick and I took Aliza to Vancouver, Friday Harbor, and Birch Bay, WA while he was still on leave from surgery. Here are some pictures:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SOJ7intB7pI/AAAAAAAAADI/kc8_utM2IJg/s320/CIMG4091.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251895950171041426" />
Capilano Suspension Bridge, Vancouver, BC

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SOJ8JIR5-EI/AAAAAAAAADQ/XhMqZP-g_bk/s320/CIMG4028.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251896611750672450" />
Butterfly House, Vancouver Aquarium

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SOJ9PXmO80I/AAAAAAAAADg/uWRsaBsHMyk/s320/CIMG4725.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251897818453308226" />
Buschart Gardens, Victoria BC

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SOJ_fHEhDxI/AAAAAAAAADo/sSmTqK2RzQ8/s320/CIMG4664.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251900287918083858" />
Sunken Garden, Buschart Gardens Victoria BC

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w8KdNa9dw2A/SOKCqZvjLaI/AAAAAAAAADw/2POwd63k9_A/s320/CIMG4841.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251903780443860386" />
Mt Rainier

Summary of Year Part 2: Patrick's hyperparathyroidism; MI Trip

Patrick's Hyperparathyroidism
Well, after our trip to Disney, Patrick was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism. It was a horrible couple of months for the whole family because his symptoms were so severe. He had practically every symptom listed for this disease. I hated seeing him so miserable and in pain. The only treatment is surgery to remove the tumor on the parathyroid gland. Thankfully there was only one tumor so only 1 of 4 glands would only be removed, which should've meant a simple 1 hour surgery.

When surgery day finally arrived June 23, 2008, we were looking forward to a quick, successful surgery. But the surgery ended up taking 4 hours and they had to remove Patrick's right thryoid gland rather than just the one little parathyroid. I had a difficult time signing off on that but it had to be done. Although recovery time took longer because it became a major surgery, he is much better now. Thank God that period of our lives is over!

Trip to MI June 2008

After Patrick's surgery, Aliza and I went to MI. We went home so I could have a 3 day girls getaway with some friends, to meet my newest nephew, Trent, and to take advantage of Aliza flying free. Because of Patrick's surgery, we left later than normal and ended up missing my girls' trip. Oh well. That happens in life. At least we had a couple of days to spend in Frankenmuth, MI (A Bavarian town) with my family. It was lots of fun for all of us. During our visit, we also celebrated Aliza's 2nd birthday with our extended family. My mom then flew home with us to stay for the month of July.

<img style="cursor:pointer; Disney

So I'm starting a blog to keep everyone updated on what's going on in my life and in our family. Be patient with me because I am not a writer and I may forget to post consistently but I will do my best.To begin I will give a summary of what has been happened this past year.

In March, Patrick's brother, Paul, who served 15 months in Iraq got stationed with us at Fort Lewis. It's nice having family nearby again. Aliza especially loves visiting with her Uncle Pau-Pau.

In May, we took a trip to Disneyworld with Patrick's family. We were so excited for this vacation with them. But as soon as we arrived at our amazing penthouse suite (my mother-in-law always finds the best deals), we realized things weren't going to happen as planned. Aliza had a fever for 3 days, which was manageable. But Patrick had to go to the ER while we were unpacking and was admitted for 3 days. He had severe stomach pain. That was the beginning of his hyperparathyroid symptoms. Despite all that, we made the best of it and squeezed in park days for our last 4 days.
